About Signs

01. What is Signs?

Signs is a platform that enables anyone to learn ASL and contribute to the creation of a growing database of sign language videos. Whether you're new to ASL or already proficient, Signs offers real-time feedback and an opportunity to share your knowledge. This helps expand the platform's resources, making ASL learning more comprehensive and accessible.

02. Our Vision

At Signs, we believe in community-powered learning. Those familiar with ASL can contribute videos, helping create a continuously expanding dataset. This ensures that as the platform grows, so does the variety of signs available to learners.

03. Who is this for?

Signs is for two key groups:

  • Learners: Those new to ASL can benefit from our AI-driven guidance, which provides real-time feedback using a 3D avatar.
  • Contributors: Anyone, both those who are experienced or just getting started with ASL can upload videos of their signs, helping to create a dataset of videos of Signs.

04. Our Partners

NVIDIA leads the project, developing the open ASL dataset in collaboration with American Society for Deaf Children. Hello_Monday/DEPT®, the creators of Fingerspelling.xyz, is responsible for building the platform, utilizing AI to facilitate real-time learning and data collection.

FAQ

01. Why did you create Signs?

NVIDIA and Hello Monday/DEPT® believe everyone has the right to expression. At the same time, NVIDIA and Hello Monday/DEPT® recognize that some communities lack equitable access to means of expression. We created this platform primarily to help teach hearing parents that may not know how to sign, connect and communicate with Deaf children and family members.

02. The platform is mostly focused on hand and finger positions—what about non-manual signals and markers?

The dataset we are building primarily focuses on accurately capturing data for hand and finger positions for each sign. However, we recognize that ASL is a rich and nuanced language where non-manual signals, such as facial expressions and head movements, play a crucial role in conveying meaning. We are also aware of regional and cultural variations in signing.

03. How will the data in the dataset be verified for accuracy?

This is a project that is for the community and by the community. Each submission will undergo verification by Deaf individuals and certified interpreters to ensure that the hand and finger positions, as well as their movements, are accurate and proficient.

04. What is the purpose of the Learn section?

The Learn section is designed to introduce users to some of the most important and commonly used signs in ASL. This section aims to provide a foundational understanding of the language and how hand and finger movements are critical in conveying meaning.

05. Who is the target audience for the Learn section?

The Learn section is tailored for beginners or those starting their journey with ASL. It offers an interactive and engaging way to learn.

06. Has the Deaf community been involved in building this?

Yes. The American Society for Deaf Children has been involved in the development of this platform. Additionally, all signs are verified by both Deaf individuals and certified interpreters to ensure cultural and linguistic proficiency.

07. How are you involving the Deaf community?

From inception to final verification, the Deaf community drives every stage of our product development, ensuring high-level linguistic integrity by members of our Deaf community.

08. Why are you involving the Deaf community?

We don't just build for the community; we build in partnership with them. Our ethical partnership is rooted in cultural preservation.

09. What is the American Society for Deaf Children’s role?

The American Society for Deaf Children provides guidance and expertise to ensure that the platform aligns with the needs and values of the Deaf community.

10. When will the dataset be released?

We started releasing in 2025; apply for access to the dataset here.

11. What is NVIDIA’s role?

NVIDIA is the data collector and controller, leading the effort to collect and annotate videos of those contributing to the Signs platform.

12. What is Hello Monday/DEPT®’s role?

Hello Monday/DEPT® is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the Signs platform, ensuring accessibility and user-friendliness.

13. Why isn’t there a cookie banner?

The Signs platform does not use any cookies. More information about Plausible Analytics can be found here.
